Communication Studies 211A:
Beginning Newswriting and Reporting
Background and Sources Assignment
Time for more analysis of a news
story, but this time we will be analyzing the reporting rather than the writing.
Analyze:
Once you've read one of these stories,
answer the following questions. This assignment is due at the beginning of the
next class period:
- In your opinion, what layer
of reporting is present in your story?
- What kind of prereporting
(education, general knowledge, reading, etc.) do you think the reporter had
to have before even starting to work on this particular story?
- What are the physical sources
the reporter has relied on in writing this story (Sometimes physical sources
are not specifically identified; if not, give your best guess as to where
the reporter might have gotten the information.)
- Who are the human sources
upon which the reporter has relied?
- How much use does the reporter
make of his/her own observations in the story?
