Materials: Handouts, fraction bar sheet, Cuisinaire rods sheet

Step 1:

¨ Cut out Cuisinaire rods.

¨ Do Activity 6.7: Looking for Patterns with the Linear Model from Mathematics for Elementary Teachers via Problem Solving: Student Activity Manual.

¨ Do Activity 4: Equivalent Fractions from Mathematics Activities for Elementary School Teachers: A Problem Solving Approach.

¨ Make a copy of the fraction strip page. Color each strip (one color per strip) and then cut all fraction pieces apart.

¨ Actively read "Adding Fractions" from Math for Fun. Make a couple of walls for yourself out of your fraction pieces.

¨ How many different ways can you make a strip of length 1 out of combinations of the fraction pieces? Record your answes like this: . Describe patterns, obstacles, etc.
